What Are Catalytic Converters?
Importance of Utilizing Catalytic Converters
Vehicle engines, whether powered by diesel or gasoline, generate pollution as a result of burning petroleum products. Besides lead, particulate matter, and certain acceptable pollutants, the primary types of pollution stemming from these engines are:
- Hydrocarbons (as burnt petroleum products)
- Carbon monoxide (from combustion byproducts)
- Nitrogen oxides (formed due to the combination of nitrogen present in the air and oxygen during combustion)
Carbon monoxide is considered toxic to all living beings. Nitrogen oxides contribute to air pollution (smog) and acid rain, while hydrocarbons further worsen air pollution. Exposure to air pollution can lead to various irreversible health issues for individuals, including but not limited to:
- Persistent coughs and irritation in the throat and respiratory tract
- Aggravation of symptoms in individuals with asthma
- Breathing difficulty, chest constriction, and lung damage
It’s important to note that the effects of smog vary for each individual, and some individuals, such as children, the elderly, and those with respiratory diseases, are more susceptible to its adverse effects.
Why is Mat Considered the Most Important Component in Catalytic Converters?
The material (Mat) is required to act as a thermal insulator to:
✅ Ensure sufficient temperature for activating the precious metals inside the catalytic base.
✅ Prevent the transfer of heat radiation and high temperatures to other vehicle components.
✅ Be flexible enough to accommodate different dimensions of the catalytic base. On the other hand, the Mat is exposed to high-temperature and high-speed exhaust gas (near the speed of sound) and must remain functional for at least 160,000 kilometers of vehicle operation.
✅The Mat must hold the catalytic base in place at different temperatures, while the interface between the base and the shell changes due to shell expansion at varying temperatures.

In this regard, the company collaborates with catalytic converter manufacturers and receives the requirements for each catalytic converter. Subsequently, based on the specific specifications of each catalytic converter, the required Mat is designed and tested. In designing this Mat, parameters such as the thickness of the final product, the surface weight of the final product, material composition percentage, pressure and tensile charts, expansion characteristics, etc., need to be designed and tested to provide a product tailored to the desired catalytic converter and its specific features.
